What is cellulitis?

Cellulitis occurs when bacteria is able to penetrate the skin and starts to divide and grow. This causes an inflammatory response from the body that can be painful. Without treatment, cellulitis can spread and become worse. Effects of cellulitis can range from local irritation and redness to  fever or even generalize sepsis if that bacteria can enter the blood stream.  There are different types of cellulitis, depending on what class bacteria has penetrated the skin.  In terms of treatment, we tend to be rather aggressive to cover multiple bacteria and to target the most common causes.

One emerging concern is a type of bacteria that causes cellulitis called MRSA. MRSA stands for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus, which is a bacteria that is resistant to simpler antibiotics. Patients at risk for MRSA include those who are immunocompromised, have diabetes, have already had treatment with another antibiotic, or have had close skin to skin contact (such as wrestlers or people living in crowded conditions).

It can be very helpful for the telehealth physician to get a photo of the infection in order to best determine which antibiotic would be appropriate.

What my patients are saying

John T.

“I made an appointment through Push Health today, in hopes of being treated for an asthma flare up. I was then linked up with Dr. DiMassa. I sure did luck out. He is second to none in the Healthcare field! Took his time, answered all of my questions, and chose the best course of treatment. I cannot get over how extremely professional that he is. I would highly recommend seeing him, virtual or in person if possible!”
